I have been using PhonePad 4 for quite a while.  Is there a cost to upgrade to PhonePad 5? What is the difference between an upgrade and an update? How do I install PhonePad 5? I don’t have a server.  Can I still use PhonePad 5? When I run the PhonePad 5 setup program it freezes part way through.  Why does this happen? How do I login to PhonePad 5 once it’s been installed? I haven’t kept up to date with the PhonePad 5 updates.  Do I need to install each update in sequence to bring it up to the latest version? I’m trying to update my PhonePad 5 Server software but I get a message saying that my data will be deleted.  Why is that? I downloaded and installed PhonePad 5 on my computer but when I run it, I get a message saying it can’t find a server.  I don’t have a server. How do I fix this? What is a Support Plan? Do I have to renew my PhonePad license each year to keep using it? How often do you release new versions of PhonePad 5?

Q. I have been using PhonePad 4 for quite a while.  Is there a cost to upgrade to PhonePad 5? A. Yes, PhonePad 5 is a major upgrade (not an update).  It was 2 years in development and there are a lot of changes and new features.  In fact, it is almost a complete rewrite.  Although we would like to make it a free upgrade, unfortunately we can’t work for free.  [top] Q. What is the difference between an upgrade and an update? A. We use 3 segment version numbers, which are classified as major.minor.release.  For example, 5.1.2.  In this example ‘5’ is the major version number, ‘1’ is the minor version number (which normally includes new features) and ‘2’ is the release number (typically bug fixes or very minor changes). When the major part changes from ‘4’ to ‘5’, ‘5’ to ‘6’, etc. this is an upgrade.  To upgrade from one version to the next, eg. from PhonePad 4 to PhonePad 5, there is a cost involved. When the minor or release part changes it is an update.  To update from one version to the next there is no cost if you have a current support plan (other than Basic).  [top] Q. How do I install PhonePad 5? A. The complete installation process (which is quite simple) is detailed in the PhonePad 5 Admin Guide.  You can access the online version of the PhonePad 5 Admin Guide here. There is also an online guide that will assist you with installation.  [top] Q. I don’t have a server.  Can I still use PhonePad 5? A. Yes, absolutely.  PhonePad 5 works on Peer-to-Peer Networks (P2P) as well as Local Area Networks (LANs).  Just select one of your computers to be a “Host PC”.  This means that it will host the PhonePad 5 Server application and the PhonePad 5 database. You can still use the Host PC as a normal workstation so you don’t need to have a dedicated computer if you don’t want to. [top] Q. When I run the PhonePad 5 setup program it freezes part way through.  Why does this happen? A. This can be caused by Anti-Virus scanners, particularly Kapersky.  Try disabling the real-time protection.  You should find the setup program will then run correctly. [top] Q. How do I login to PhonePad 5 once it’s been installed? A. Start PhonePad 5 on your workstation or Host PC/Server and enter the default administrator user account details: Username:     Admin Password:      admin Once logged in you will be able to set up user accounts for all of your users. [top] Q. I haven’t kept up to date with the PhonePad 5 updates.  Do I need to install each update in sequence to bring it up to the latest version? A. No, you only need to install the latest update.  All previous updates will be automatically applied using our “dynamic updating” system. [top] Q. I’m trying to update my PhonePad 5 Server software but I get a message saying that my data will be deleted.  Why is that? A. You are doing a full install of the PhonePad 5 Server instead of an update.  Download the server update and install that. [top] Q. I downloaded and installed PhonePad 5 on my computer but when I run it, I get a message saying it can’t find a server.  I don’t have a server. How do I fix this? A. PhonePad 5 uses client/server technology so there are two parts to it.  You need to download and run the PhonePad 5 Server setup program to either a server or Host PC (which is just another workstation acting as a server).  You then need to download and run the PhonePad 5 Workstation setup program on each workstation. [top] Q. What is a Support Plan? A. Support plans provide you with technical support and in some cases free minor updates.  The level of support depends on the support plan you are subscribed to.  When you purchase PhonePad 5 it includes a 12 month Standard Support Plan.  After 12 months you can renew the plan if you wish.  If you don’t renew it then you will revert to a Basic Support Plan. [top] Q. Do I have to renew my PhonePad license each year to keep using it? A. No. When you purchase PhonePad it is a perpetual license, ie. it never expires.  There are no annual fees to use the software.  Depending on the Support Plan you choose there may be an annual fee for that, but if you decide not to renew it you can still continue using the version of PhonePad that you already have. [top] Q. How often do you release new versions of PhonePad 5? A. Many software companies do a major release every 12 months, which means you have to wait up to a year or so to get any new features.  Instead of doing this, we continue to release new features throughout the year via minor updates.  Major releases are done every few years so you really get your money’s worth when you purchase a major version.  If you renew your Support Plan each year (Standard and above) you will continue to get enhancements and new features without having to do a major upgrade.
