As long as all of your computers connect to the Internet via the same modem/router, you should be able to use PhonePad. |
No, you can select one of your workstations to be the Server. And the good news is you can still use it as a workstation too. |
When you don't have a Server on your network then you can select one of your workstations to act as a Server. We call this a Host PC as it will be hosting the PhonePad 5 Server service and PhonePad 5 database. |
Here's what we recommend for a Host PC.
It should be the fastest and most powerful workstation you have, that also has the lightest workload.
The reason for this is that all of your users will be connecting to this computer so you don't want it bogged down with number crunching, graphics processing, or other performance intensive activities.
PhonePad can only be as fast as the Server or Host PC the PhonePad Server and database are located on. |
If you turn off your Host PC then others won't be able to connect to PhonePad, or they will lose their connection if they are already logged in.
You can lock your Host PC, or even log out, as long as you don't power it off. |
If you've kept up with the news you will know that online hacking is a real threat to the security of data. So many big name online systems have been hacked, resulting in an enormous amount of personal data being released on the Internet or sold for nefarious purposes. We're not convinced on the security of online systems and so think that your data is more secure if it's stored locally on your network.
However, we are developing a version of PhonePad that has the advantageous of a cloud-based system without the disadvantages. |
If you are wanting to reinstall PhonePad on your Server (or Host PC) due to problems you are experiencing with PhonePad, please contact Support first. It may be something that can be resolved without having to resort to reinstallation.

If you need to move your PhonePad 5 database to a different Server or Host PC you can do this easily with the Move Database application (which you can download by clicking this link)
Download and install Move Database on both your old Server/Host PC and your new Server/Host PC.
Follow the instructions in the included manual or access the online instructions. |
PhonePad 5 will run on virtually any Windows-based network. If your computers are interconnected in some way then PhonePad should run fine.
